Our 4th of July

7.7a

We had such a fun 4th this year celebrating with family.  A whole bunch of family members had rented a big house down the Cape for the week and we were at our cottage, so naturally we spent the day with them.  We started off with mini golf.  I have to tell you how much the girls adore their little cousins.  They are such good mother's helpers too.

After 18 holes of putt putt, we all ate lunch and then headed to the beach.  It was crowded and the zipper on my Jo Totes camera bag broke completely a few days earlier.  I've been storing my camera in a large ziploc baggie in the camera bag to keep it from getting sandy which means that photo taking at the beach has been spotty.  It's not so easy to just pull out the camera now with it in the baggie.  I've been debating over what to replace that bag with for a really long time now and I'm still not ready to make a decision.  I'm not tough on handbags but it appears that I'm tough on camera bags, so do I want another $100 bag with fake leather that may start to look worn out in a few years (my current bag is trashed with a substantial amount of color missing) or do I want a $300+ bag which should (hopefully) last longer.  I just don't know.

We headed back to the family rental house after the beach for a BBQ.  None of us had been down here before on the 4th so we didn't know what to expect for fireworks.  Someone suggested we head to the beach as the sun was setting and if there were fireworks, we'd be in a good spot for viewing.  Forgot the fireworks, I was in heaven taking sunset photos.

Technically, you need a tripod for fireworks photography but I didn't have mine with me. These were all taken handheld, shot wide open (so no starbursts), and are passable at this size.  Blown up, they are trash.

Apparently, the beach is the place to be.  When we left, the parking lot was full and there were people everywhere.  At one point, we could even see fireworks from the Vineyard.  Such beautiful views and a great way to end the day.

I'm glad you got some sunset photos and truly enjoy your real-life photo tips/thoughts. I often have great plans of catching fireworks photos at the beach (we're in the Pacific Northwest) but usually find myself with no tripod and a camera in a baggie to protect from sand/snacks/water bottles. I end up just snapping some good-enough pics. Enjoying the moment with the neighborhood crew definitely wins out over me fumbling with setup and settings, but ... one of these years, I swear! :) The front-yard photo of the cousins is wonderful.

Great photos!!...I've bought a number of camera bags in the past and i kept going for the cheaper option, they were never really somehow quite right, so i took the plung and bought an expensive camera bag and have never looked at another bag since...so my advice is, get the bag you really want, if like me you use the bag all the time its worth every penny... Hope that helps

What a great day - and beautiful photos! I had my camera and tripod this year for fireworks, but ended up deciding to leave it in the car and just enjoy the fireworks.

As for bags, I know what you mean about the fake leather. I have two old and now retired from use (which probably means I should donate them) Epiphanie bags. I love them, but they're worn and I also wanted a bag that could be a backpack or over the shoulder/crossbody. After searching and searching, I actually ended up getting a diaper bag. It's cute, not too bulky, and based on other people I know that use it as an actual diaper bag - durable!

If you do want to consider a non-camera camera bag, you can by inserts for just about any bag on Amazon (just search camera insert).
