These girls are gonna give me nothing but trouble.

The clothing thing that I was warned about has made an appearance in our house.

First of all, they have to pick their clothes out of the closet. I can no longer bring three outfits downstairs and say, "Pick one." Nope. They have to pick it out of the closet. Okay, fine. This process sometimes eats up precious time because we all have to go upstairs and then we all have to come back down the stairs. Now I see why people live in ranches.

And then there's the time involved with the actual picking out of the outfit. No, you cannot wear your purple sundress. It is 35 degrees out. No, you can't wear that Gymboree jumper to school. If you wear that dress, you need to wear a sweater with it. Pick a sweater, please, not a spring jacket. Okay, but that doesn't really go. At all.

The night before school days, I do have them select their outfits so that the next morning isn't full of insanity. Grammy bought the girls these velvet-like dresses with polka dots last year. She said that it was okay for the girls to wear the dresses to school. (When they wear something to school, there is always the possibility that they will return home with paint on it.) So we have three of these dresses. Emily keeps picking out that dress to wear to school. Her teacher must think that we are sending her to school in the same clothes.

Most recently, Allie's outfit of choice for bed has been a pair of pajamas with a sundress on top. Sometimes she goes through two or three pajama changes before she falls asleep.

These pictures are from last weekend. They all insisted on wearing dresses. Allie's top isn't really a dress but we call it a dress to keep her happy. Anna's red tights were my idea. Nothing else was clean for her to wear under her dress and it was freezing out so she had to wear something. They all insisted on wearing those purple and green ribbon headbands. Those are rings on Allie's fingers.

And didn't you know that Alice in Wonderland knee socks go over leggings? Em walked around Target like that.

While some people might shake their heads and say something like "how can that mother let her child(ren) go out in public like that", those of us who have been there, done that, smile. Knowing it wasn't worth the battle. Elaine

They are adorable and I would love to see them at Target like that, hehehe!

That specific trend has not started here yet, but we have been facing the "do it by self" thing for at least six months. THey are quite proficient with underwear and pants, so this week they have started demanding to wear the tops by themselves, too. Shoes, a thing of the past. The easy ones, I just give to them. The harder ones, I have to give them and wait until they are convinced they cannot do it alone and ask for help.

Hilarious! Whether the outfits match or not, they sure do look like they are having fun and are happy. This post was lovely to read and see after your last post.
The girls just get prettier every day.

Your girls are so beautiful and I love their sense of fashion. And yes, Alice in Wonderland socks CERTAINLY DO go over the leggings. Every time :) Also, when my girls insist on wearing their sundresses in the middle of winter, I say okay as long as they were a long sleeve shirt and thick stockings underneath. It's strange, but it works.
Get used to this fashion stage. It lasts a long time. My 6 year old went to 1st grade today wearing a blue/white tie-dyed shirt and white/pink and khaki tie-dyed yoga pants. She picked it out with her dad last night before bed. This year, we also went to the library dressed in a wedding dress and as snow-white. When she was 4 we went to Target and the diner dressed as superman and as super girl. Yes, people must wonder what I am thinking, but she is happy and that makes me happy. And that is what matters to me.

I think most people simply enjoy little girls being little girls and dressing themselves. I love it! My little boys have never really cared what they wear.

That same trend has been going on at our house. It's funny, but it drives me insane!

I love the "dress yourself" looks! My girls who are 5 & 8, have their very own fashion style! ;- )

So cute! My twins aren't quite there yet. We live in the Northwest and one thing I love is going to target and seeing toddler girls there with their mommies and they are wearing their most fancy dress paired with rain boots. I'm sure that's partially the mother's choice being that it's so rainy but I love it.

I have no idea if this 'theory' is proven, but I heard somewhere, from another mom of teens or something, that if you let them have freedom in this area when they are toddlers it'll be easier when they are in their teens when they want to wear crazy stuff.

This made me LOL... my daughter turns 3 in January and has been doing this for about a year already. And for almost that long it's been all about dresses! Now she's in a bed so we usually find her in different pj's or random outfits when we go get her in the morning.

they seriously look like best friends- and that they love each other so much! on to the post- my 2 year old is getting into that want to pick out his own clothes too. it is the hardest thing to get him ready in the morning. and- i'm finding that if he doesnt like what I picked out, during naptime, he changes.

I have been a fan of your blog for a long time (discovered it through HDYDI). Just curious...do your girls have their own clothes or share? I have identical twin girls turning 2 in one week. They have been sharing clothes up to this point.

Hi Margaret! The girls share all their clothes but there are some outfits that are known to belong to specific girls. Like Allie's purple sundress - Anna and Em know that this is Allie's.
