Photos from the lake

As I mentioned in my previous post, my brother-in-law lives on a pond.  (Actually, two of Rich's siblings live next to each other.  More boats!)  We, especially the kids, always refer to it as "the lake" but it's not big enough to be a lake, which has its advantages.  It's quiet and calm with no public access and there's a small island with a good area for swimming.

I'm so happy with how all of these photos came out but the fact that Anna is not really in them doesn't sit well.  She was there with us when all of these were taken; she just wasn't in the mood to be photographed and I wasn't going to force her to pose.  Forced posing doesn't work for anyone.  Whenever anyone asked her how she felt, she would respond with, "I feel fine.  I'm not sick."  She's a fighter.  And incredibly cute wearing my sunglasses.

That sounds like an amazing location!

I have a photography question, if you don't mind. (And if it's too complicated to explain [to a novice], feel free to say that, too.) :)

The pictures of Allie and Emily sitting on the dock, turned around to face the camera...did you lighten the exposure in editing? We were just doing some hiking this morning, and I took quite a few pictures. It wasn't sunny in the middle of the woods, and there wasn't enough light on the girls' faces.

Thanks for any light you can shed (no pun intended!)!

I just noticed that one of the girls has a birthmark on her leg. How does that work with identicals - do they have different birthmarks? That's a good trick for others to tell them apart (in the shorts weather only for your kiddos, I guess!)

I've been reading your blog for a few years, but I don't know if I've ever commented before. I just had to say how gorgeous these photos are, especially the last shot of sunset over the lake/pond. It seems like your girls are suddenly looking so grown up!

Thank you!!!!!

Mandy - I used spot metering. The "spot" is the focal point, which was on her face. I usually meter down one as I would rather have it underexposed and just lighten it up in PSE. Does that make sense?

Jess - they all have different birthmarks which does help in identifying who is who. Allie has a little one on the side of her chin.
