Seeing the sights - NYC

With the rain gone and the sun shining, Rich and I had Friday morning to see some sights before hitting the road ahead of the dreaded afternoon traffic in Connecticut. We decided to save time (and money) by not eating breakfast at the hotel and picking up something to eat while we walked. Honestly, I would have been happy with an egg McMuffin (or a bacon, egg and cheese McGriddle) but as we walked over to the Staten Island Ferry, we spotted a deli that seemed busy. We purchased delicious toasted bagels with butter for only $1 each!

We were able to see the Statue of Liberty from afar.

The ferry to Ellis Island was right there so we decided to walk over to see how long of a ride it was. The thought being that we could just ride the ferry over for a closer look at American history and return immediately. Well, the line was outrageously long. We discovered after the fact that it was the 125th anniversary, which explains the enormous line. We will need to plan better for next time. (Hopefully, there will be a next time.)

It was bitterly cold outside and I was ill prepared for the weather. We didn't have a map (poor planning) so we walked back towards our hotel and then down Wall Street.

I'm like a little old lady now and can't stand to be outside in the cold, especially not without proper clothing, so to end my complaining, we returned to the hotel to fetch our bags and check out. Our drive home took less than four hours and was uneventful.

Until next time, New York.....

I'm thinking of buying a camera soon. How much did the camera you use cost? Do you have a recommendation on a good camera for newer photographers?

What is it with the traffic in CT?!! We drove to NJ a few weeks back, and we literally spent more time in traffic in CT that we did driving to CT from NJ. Awful. I went to college in CT, and I remember doing my drives home at 11pm just to avoid the mess.
I bet you'll be able to do NYC with the girls when they get bigger. My stepson loves NYC - the train ride, the big buildings, the museums. And, aside from the price of a decent hotel, it's pretty cheap to visit.
Glad you got a little getaway.

Hi Bethany - A Nikon D7000 (body only) costs about $1200 - you can probably get it on sale for $1100. For a new photographer, I would suggest looking at the Nikon D5100. Nikon kit lenses are fairly decent and will work well with light.

I would hate for someone to buy a D90 or a D7000 and then not really use it. If after a year or 2, you outgrow the 5100, you can always sell it and upgrade to a D90 or D7000.

Eyes Wide Open - CT traffic drives me insane! I agree - It is nice living within 4 hours of NYC b/c we can bring the girls when they are older. There is so much to see there.

I grew up in NY and moved to CT. I miss the city so much. These pictures reminded me of my trips into the city and jaunts around town as a teenager. Ah, memories.

As for CT traffic - WTH? It's awful. But not as bad as Long Island where I grew up. I lived in Los Angeles and Long Island has it beat.

Love the Halloween pics even though they are "action" shots. In CT, trick-or-treating was cancelled because of the downed trees and wires. My 3 girls were devastated. So we made the best of it, dressed up, went to their Nana's house like we do every year and had a party in the dark. We used our jack-o-lantern and candles as light, ate pizza and candy and "trick-or-treated" at Nana's front door. They went up and down the stairs 3 times, one for each girl, (there were trees down on either side of her doorway so we couldn't even attempt to try anyone else's house) and knocked on our door and we gave them candy. I took pictures of them from inside the entry. My oldest ended up saying it was the best Halloween yet.

The next morning, one of my 3 y/os said to me, "Momma, you are so funny". I asked why and she answered, "Because you were at EVERY house we went to taking our pictures and Nana was handing out the candy." I laughed and told her that we ran ahead because I wanted to take their pictures. I really didn't want to spoil her magical thinking. She cracked me up good!

I would have loved to meet you and your girls, but you don't really know me as much as I know you from your blog.
