Sisters

oct8a

My father's older brother passed away shortly before my birth. Cancer took him at an age when it shouldn't have.

I have three younger brothers and we had our fair share of sibling arguments growing up. My father would always say to us, "These are the only brothers (and sister) that you will ever have."

As a parent, I have said this to my girls. (Believe me when I tell you that you will repeat at least one thing that your parents said to you to your own children. You think that you won't. But you will.) When they are grumpy and fighting with each other over something absolutely ludicrous, such as "a kid Little People" I will say, "These are the only sisters you will ever have and you are so lucky to have each other so let's not fight over a toy. Okay?"

I tell the girls how I always wanted a sister and how great it is that they have two sisters. When I was younger, my brothers didn't want to play doll house or Barbies with me. My girls always have someone to play with. (Except when they are fighting over toys. Or having their alone time.)

Allie has asked me why I don't have a sister. Hmmm, I can't really explain that one but find it interesting that she is asking.

As a mother, I love witnessing that bond between them. Watching their closeness.

They will always have each other.

I was showing my girls some pictures of their uncles' visit two years ago. My hubby has two older brothers, and they've suddenly started talking about them. They've also been asking, "Who is Daddy's sister?"...but interestingly they haven't asked about my brothers or sisters. I'm an only child, and I wonder if they somehow know that?

Particularly as an only child, I am so grateful to see my girls with each other...such an amazing blessing. :) :)

When we found out our second was another girl i was so excited for Emma to have a sister. I would've loved a boy too but something about sisters (I guess bc I have one) is so special!

Great post. I may tear up! I have twin girls and I too love to see the bond between them. I'm an only child so it's very special for me! Thank you for making me smile today!

soooo...sweet! I always say to my girls....Love your sister, Mommy got all these stinky brothers (I have 4 brothers)! Now they will tell me that they love their sister and sometimes tell me b/c "Mommy got all these stinky brothers!" HILARIOUS! Even better they did it in front of all my brothers! I wish I had a sister. :( Oddly enough, they have NEVER questioned where my hubby's sisters/brothers are (he's an only)! I am so greatful my girls have each other...their bond is amazing and to be envied for sure!

I'm an only child, and one of my favorite parts of parenting is watching my kids interact together.
