'You're a superstar' photoshoot

My children are not always cooperative in front of the camera. You'd be surprised at how often eyes are closed on purpose, silly faces are made or I am simply told that I can't take any pictures. I find that I tend to take a photojournalistic approach to photography and that may be because I lack posing skills.

I have had to be extremely creative with the girls in having them pose when I want them to because sometimes photojournalism just doesn't work. Whenever the girls wear their oversized sunglasses, I do whatever I can to persuade them to pose for me.

One of my tricks is to pretend to be someone else.

Allie threw on her big purple sunglasses near the end of the Memorial Day cook-out while we were in VA and I so desperately wanted photos. I quickly transformed myself into a French photographer complete with a French accent, which I'm sure is absolutely horrendous but it does the trick.

"Dahling, you look fabulous today.

Would you mind standing here so I can take some photographs?

Perfect! Give me another smile. Beautiful!

Tell me about your recent movies, Dahling.

Gorgeous! Give me another big smile. Stunning!

You are such a superstar, Dahling."

(spoken with a french, albeit horrible, accent)

The results:

Even Emilia (made up French name) took a break from sunbathing to participate.

Photography notes: I know that, technically speaking, these aren't the greatest but I love them.
There was a lot of greenery and on my laptop, I can see a green color cast on their faces. (I'm not calibrated though.) I'm too lazy to attempt to edit it.

That's a great trick! :) Although my photos are nowhere near yours, I sometimes tell the girls that their dolls want to take their picture. I'll hold the doll - as best I can and still look through the viewfinder - and they think it's so funny. They'll sometimes even pose for more shots to let another doll (or bear, or mouse) have her turn. :) It's not easy to balance, but it sometimes does the trick.

Shots in the moment are always going to be happy memories instead of "polished" photographs. They are great pictures and they have SUCH cute smiles :) :) :)

What I love about your photography is the photojournalism approach. It's story telling and you do it soooo well. It's not a strength of mine so I admire your skill. Also, thanks for the kinds words.
