Cottage Update (last week), Beach Photos

Last month was one of the cloudiest, coolest, rainiest Mays on record.  I don't know about you but the weather definitely affects my mood and this delay of spring/summer left me somewhat unmotivated.  A demo team was at the cottage last Friday to begin work on the bathroom.  Looking at the forecast for the three day Memorial Day weekend, Saturday was the only day with any chance of nice weather.  It turned out to be a beautiful day with temperatures almost to 70.  It was nice in the sun, a bit cool when the sun ducked behind the clouds.  Due to the forecast of rain on Monday and plans we had for Sunday, we headed down to the cottage on Saturday.

As suspected, the contractor had turned off the water to the house and with no water in the kitchen, no cleaning could take place.  We were pleasantly surprised to find someone there working in the bathroom.  We were not surprised that he was removing the subfloor around the toilet area.  Even though the bathroom remodel is becoming more of project than we wanted it to, the damage is being fixed.  Apparently, when the bathroom was updated however many years ago, the toilet wasn't done properly.  The good news is that the walls under the shower surround were in good shape.  The tub is a real tub and I see no need to replace it.  The contractor is going to have it reglazed.  There were tub surround panels in place on the walls with tiles above that, but again, it didn't look like it had been done by a professional.  For budget purposes, I had agreed to simply replace the shower panels but when I measured the tub, I found it slightly off from a standard size tub.  The contractor confirmed this and told us it would eat more time and money to get a custom made shower surround, so now someone is tiling the walls.

Without water or a bathroom (although thankfully, the beach bathrooms at the end of the street are open) and someone working in the cottage, we mostly ran errands - beach stickers, home improvement store.  Almost every house on our street had occupants, which was so different from what we are used to.  We met and chatted with our neighbors - a few we had met when we initially looked at the cottage with the realtor.  They told us that almost everyone is there for Memorial Day weekend and Fourth of July week.  We also learned which cottages are strictly rentals - only one.  Some rent to friends and family, which is probably what we'll try next year.

We ate dinner at Baxter's which is still a favorite of mine regardless of the yearly price increases.  The food is good and you can't beat the views.  Plus, it reminds me of my childhood.  Of course, I ordered the chowder.

What are beach stickers?

Instead of paying $20-$25 every time you visit a beach (during the summer months), residents/taxpayers pay a small fee (around $25-$40) for a sticker on their car. Some towns also have resident only beaches or parking lots - you need the sticker to park there.

I am so glad you are still writing! These pictures are beautiful - we're actually going to be in Cape Cod the end of June in Barnstable. I can't wait. Glad everything is good with your family. :)

I think it's finally about to heat up but I have to admit, I've been loving this weather. I'm 7 months pregnant and hate our New England summers, so this late spring has been like a gift to me. Sorry for everyone else who has hated it so much.
