More portraits - and a thank you to Toy Story!

Okay, I've been working on a blog post regarding our visit to the zoo last weekend and it is taking longer than expected so I will have to finish it tomorrow.

In the meantime, I thought I would post some more portraits. I try to practice using my 85mm lens when possible. The main issue is that my children do not like to look at the camera. I'll try tricks such as "I think there is a spider on my head. IS THERE A SPIDER ON MY HEAD?" They will usually look for two seconds. Just long enough to say, "No."

Here was my attempt outside one day.

And then one night I found the perfect opportunity while the girls were watching Toy Story 2. I love Em's expression in this one.

To answer some of your questions...

It is pretty safe to assume that I have used my Speedlight with any indoor pictures that you see. Our house doesn't get a lot of natural light and my camera is noisy with ISO over 200 so Speedlight it is. Unfortunately, I think it caused a bit of red from Anna's shirt to be reflected on her brow in those photos from yesterday.

I tend to slightly underexpose my photos taken indoors because I know that it is an easy fix. Even when I meter outside with natural light, my photos feel underexposed to me so I sometimes lighten those as well. The only thing I do is add a Screen Layer in Photoshop Elements.

I love that you say that to make them look. I try singing Itsy Bitsy Spider to them and then they look. LOL

I need to start using a speedlight. I haven't been and I need to...my indoor photos are always so dull. Thanks for the info!!

Wow....I guess i have a lot to learn with cameras. I am worried my kiddos will be all grown by the time I learn to take some good pictures!

aw, sarah! i didn't know we had the same problem with getting our kids to look at the camera. that makes me feel better. :D

the only way i can get the monthly pictures is to have the TV on behind me.

I have starting saying there are random characters IN the camera that you can only see if you smile into the lens. I have gotten more shots of my 4year old in the past month looking at the camera then in the past year.

Oh, and looking or not they are still beautiful shots!
