Last weekend was the first chance we've had this year to spend time down at the cottage. The weather has been craptastic so it doesn't really matter what our schedules have been like anyway. But we finally ended up with a gorgeous weekend! The only rain was overnight and it was finally warm. Because Rich wasn't working on Friday and would be able to pick up the girls from school, I drove down to the cottage for the day in order to clean. It's so much easier to take of cleaning without a house full of people and stuff. I needed to vacuum everything and then clean the bathroom and kitchen. I left to head back home in the early afternoon and I could not believe all the traffic I passed headed down for the weekend.
The girls and I had our dance classes Friday afternoon/evening and Rich had something Saturday morning so we packed up the van and finally hit the road midmorning on Saturday. As we were planning for the weekend, Rich suggested stopping at the canal for lunch (we often do this to break up the drive) and I couldn't get that bike path out of my mind. I had thought about stopping there on Friday for a run but the timing and weather weren't in my favor. So on Saturday, while Rich and the girls ate lunch and explored on the rocks, I went for a 3 mile run.
And it was wonderful!
The weather lately has made running difficult for me. I'm pretty much done with the treadmill right now and I hate feeling cold so when it's 55 and overcast, the last thing I want to do is head out for a run. It was warm last Monday (almost 80 degrees.) I ran 4 miles outside and it felt wonderful. The rest of the week was rainy, chilly, overcast and I just couldn't do it. I've been having issues with my left ankle so I tried to justify the running break with the thought that it would give my ankle a chance to rest.
I had a great run on Saturday which confirms that my running rut is related to the weather and routine. It was refreshing to run somewhere different. I had wanted to run more than 3 miles but because everyone wanted to get to the cottage, I cut it to 3 miles. After we finished the drive and unpacked the van, I headed out for another 2 miles. So I did get in 5 miles total.
The kids are into jumping pictures now.
Rich had yard work to take care of and my main goal for the weekend was to make some progress painting. We still have a lot of painting projects left and I just want to be done with it. By the time I ran/walked again, showered and made all the beds, there wasn't enough time to do anything before we headed out to dinner.
We mainly hung around the cottage on Sunday. While it was nice and sunny, it definitely wasn't beach weather. Although, there were quite a few people on the beach and even some in the water.
Here's a before photo of the master bedroom.
The cottage was sold after the previous owners passed away and aside from a couple of pieces of furniture and some personal items, everything was left as is. In the master, three of the walls have wood paneling. The remainder of the walls are this weird wood/plywood boarding and that room is so dark. In the interest of time, I was originally going to leave the wood paneling as is and paint the rest of the walls white. I've now decided to paint the paneling too.
Here are some progress photos. The white paint is primer. That's why the walls still look blah. I'm trying to get the entire room primed first. That wood/plywood boarding soaks it up and we've found we need multiple coats, which takes additional time.
This is going to look so much better when I finish! I can already see a huge difference.
The curtains haven't been replaced yet. That will come last. This is the only wall without wood paneling. I haven't made a final decision yet, but I'm thinking of painting this wall white and using a nautical blue on the other three walls. I think it will make that white paneling pop. I don't want the paint to darken the room though even though it wouldn't be too much wall. Still debating.
Side note on the bed: I'm not a fan of painting things just to paint but the bed does need to be repainted, as does the bureau. They are an off-white mostly flat color right now. But first, the room!
We opted to head home Sunday night, partly to beat traffic and partly because we had stuff to do at home.
While we had a beautiful weekend, the weather turned on us Tuesday. We are finally warm today - in the 70s - but on Wednesday, I was actually watching the thermostat because I thought I was going to have to pop the heat back on. It's the end of May! Rich came home from work and asked if the AC had been on because it was so chilly in the house.
