Photography with or without reason

Years and years ago, after I'd spun that dial from A to M, I carried my camera around with me all the time.  It wasn't that I was afraid of missing a moment - I had realized the importance of practice, and photographing in different locations with varying light gave me that practice.  Despite preaching the importance of practicing, I eventually shifted away from carrying my camera everywhere because I felt much more comfortable in my abilities.  And honestly, lugging around and babysitting a big, heavy camera isn't always pleasant.  Lately, I mostly find myself picking up my camera only if I see something or I have an idea.  I do continue to bring it on day trips but I definitely don't carry it around as much as I used to.  I was looking through older photos and you know what?   Those photos from times when one normally wouldn't have a camera in hand sometimes are the best photos.

Not too long ago, I photographed some nieces and nephews at a local park for their holiday cards.  I obviously had my camera with me because the afternoon had a photography purpose but as the day went on, I realized how happy I was that I had my camera.

Great photos, i love your style of photography, it always seems alive and interesting, i carry my camera a lot and even get some funny looks at times, I've forced myself to always use manual nowadays and don't think i could go back now, my biggest hurdle is i get very despondent with my own photography as i don't think its very good, as much as I try, it's too posed and uninteresting, do you have any tips that would help???

Thank you, Adrian. First, I have to say that your photos are beautiful! I think we all get down on ourselves - it's hard not to compare to others. I do it all the time. If you think you are showing too much posing, don't pose at all. Many times, I see my kids doing something and just grab my camera.

Thank you for your kind words and good advice, it's something I've been trying to do lately is capture more natural moments and movement. Its funny how as soon as my youngest daughter notices the camera she instantly jumps into number of over the top poses and pouting, thanks again....

Great shots! I feel like I could have written parts of this myself. I used to be so much better about taking my camera everywhere and practicing and looking more closely at things when I first got my camera and now it only leaves the house when I have a plan. I should really challenge myself to bring it out more often.
