Sewing Season and vacation thoughts

Sewing season.  Similar to tax season but with less drama.  Blogging for me may be spotty these upcoming weeks due to Sewing Season.  I normally don't consider myself a procrastinator but that's what I've become and so now I need to cram in a whole bunch of sewing for our upcoming Disney vacation.  And why do I torture myself so?  It's for the children.  Think of the children.

I find that with most things in life, I'm more productive if I work on something from start to finish.  If I have to put something down and revisit it multiple times, eh, it's hard for me to get my groove back.  And with sewing projects, it's very hard to work on something from start to finish in one shot.

So here's a bit of what I've recently accomplished:

aug24a

Three princesses for three princesses.  These are for our lunch at Akershus in Epcot.

aug24b

Anna's Olaf top.

aug24c

The top front of Allie's Elsa dress.  You can't tell from the photo but the fabric is sparkly.

aug24d

The back.

So we recently had the opportunity to book FastPass plus for our Magic Bands - I'm still working on the new lingo - and it was a bit of a disaster.  Well, not disaster but not the great thing it's supposed to be, in my opinion.  Because we have two rooms and Grammy's the adult in the second room, Rich couldn't add FastPasses for her but he could for the kid that was listed as being in Room #2.  Made no sense.  He ended up having to call to have someone fix it.  Then, of course, the only FastPass that I really wanted was for the Anna and Elsa meet and greet but those weren't available and even if they were, I highly doubt there would be six of them.  I guess my disgruntlement revolves around the fact that we're deciding what rides/events we are going to want to do 60 days before our vacation.  Disney is becoming a little too rigid for me.  I don't like that loss of spontaneity.  But the kids are excited.  Think of the children!

I finished a book last week that had me wanting to visit Charleston, SC.  It was on our list of potential vacation spots a looooong time ago but then we had kids and that vacation was shelved.  With the girls older, our vacation possibilities are expanding.  Also, if you can't tell, I like to dream of vacations.  Who doesn't?  Virginia Beach is another place I'd be interested in checking out.  What is it like compared to the beaches here?  And I still want to bring the girls to the Florida Keys.  As of right now, we are planning to visit DC in the spring. . .

Do you make the tank tops or just buy them?

Charleston is great for kids!! The beaches are warmer and there's plenty to do as a family. I lived there for three years and loved it!

Charleston is AMAZING and I highly reccomend going but I would wait a few years before taking the girls- I think the main attraction is the history which might fly over the heads. They also have a great selection of ghost tours (many of which are historically based and take you through the old grave yards) but those might be too scary.

Also, love the sewing projects- especially the Olaf top!

What do you do with all the Disney dresses and outfits once vacation is over? Do the girls still wear them throughout the year?

I buy the tank tops. Right now, I really like these cami tops from The Children's Place. They have a slim fit and don't lose their shape. I try to wait until they are on sale and then add a coupon code on top.

The girls wore a lot of the last round of Disney clothes outside of Disney. I did save the nicer dresses for their younger cousins. I don't know what we'll do this time around yet. Some of the outfits, they will probably wear everyday - others definitely not. They think it's fun to wear Piglet, etc at Disney but wouldn't wear that otherwise. There's actually a big market for custom re-sales. I may do that with some of them.

Good to hear about Charleston! Yes, I was thinking at least a few years from now.

I took my first child free get-a-way last October to Charleston. It was amazing. The food was fantastic. It was walkable. it was historical. I highly recommend.

You are so talented! Your girls are lucky! And Disney does seem rigid. I can't wait to take my daughters (ages 3 and 1) in a few years, but it seems more complicated than it used to be!

I know exactly what you mean about Disney. It is still my favorite place to be, but the planning has become just so harsh. I am sorry that you had so much trouble with the fast pass plus. I made all the planning for both our room, and the room my daughter, son in law and grands were in. I guess I was lucky. Keep trying a fast pass may pop up. They just announced that all the Frozen Summer Fun has been extended past August 30, and you will love it. All the frozen characters come out for the fireworks held in the Studios. The show was wonderful. Once again, the clothes you make the girls are just amazing. Shame you can't let that accounting thing go and let your creative side just take over....but, I guess that is life. Thanks for sharing. I wish I could help you with tips for the parks. It really is not as bad as it seems....once you are there. Good luck.

Back in April a friend of mine took his three girls to Disney. Another friend, who's a cast member, told me to tell him that there's no fast pass available for there (I assume that's still true from your post?) and to get in line right when EPCOT opens, because lines were averaging around 4 hours.

I passed on the info. I assume he did, in fact, show up at opening but the line was still around 4 hours. I saw a lot of griping on facebook when he was in the line; however, after the fact, he said it was totally worth it because his girls are in love with Frozen and they were just thrilled with the experience.

Oh, I just googled and I see pretty much all of my info is out of date and they're at MK now. Well... on the bright side, even if the fast passes were out this will still probably keep the wait shorter than 4 hours.

Charleston is my hometown. It's a beautiful place. What book were you reading?

Virginia beach is kind of dump! If you are looking for cute east coast beaches east of the dc area I would recommend rehoboth beach or Bethany. Adorable and a lot nicer than va beach

Caroline - The book was The Invention of Wings. Excellent book.

Debbie - As much as I would LOVE to let my creative side take over, it doesn't come with benefits :(

We went to the Outer Banks in NC this year for the first time and it was great. I'd recommend that over Charleston or Virginia Beach.

We've been with the girls to DC, Williamsburg, and Myrtle Beach in the last few years. We may be ready for Charleston or Savannah in another year or so.

the dresses are beautiful! you are very talented, Sarah.

According to this blog you can try for "comeback passes" for the Anna and Elsa character meet. Or just keep checking the app for FastPass openings during your stay. Something might pop up closer to your trip.

Try again for the fast passes at midnight, when you are 30 days out. I missed the fast passes in our 60 day window, but decided to try at the 30 day mark hoping maybe they opened up more passes for those not staying at the resorts. Somehow it worked out although when I asked cast members if Disney does open up more fast passes on the 30th day they denied knowing if it was true. If you don't get it then keep trying right up until the day before you will be in the park. Also try to split your party up if you can and only get 3 or 4 fast passes.
